The commercial and industrial sectors in Ireland are the largest users of virgin polymers and provide Emerald Isle Recycle with the largest volume of recyclable polymers. Within these sectors packaging waste represents a significant volume, with recent surveys suggesting that 690,000 tonnes entered this sector in the UK in 2001, with the majority being polyethylene (PE) films at 266,000 tonnes which are particularly suitable for recycling and manufacture into recycled polyethylene products .
